Back to newsThe city of Chania, in western Crete, is completing a major urban regeneration project covering thirty city blocks in its historic center. The redevelopment involves upgrading streets, pavements, public spaces, and infrastructure across a significant portion of the downtown area. For visitors, this means improved walkability and a more polished experience when exploring the city on foot. Some temporary disruptions from construction activity may still be present in parts of the center during the final phases of work. Chania's old town, Venetian harbor, and surrounding neighborhoods remain fully accessible and continue to welcome tourists. Once complete, the renewed city center will offer a cleaner, more pedestrian-friendly environment for those discovering the shops, restaurants, and historic landmarks that make Chania one of Crete's most visited destinations.
