Fire Breaks Out in Messara Plain, Southern Crete

Friday, 19 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
A fire broke out in a reed and dry vegetation area in the Messara plain, in the southern part of the Heraklion regional unit. The Heraklion Fire Service responded promptly, dispatching two fire trucks and four firefighters to contain the blaze. The Messara plain is an agricultural region located roughly 45 kilometers south of Heraklion city, known for its fertile land and proximity to the archaeological site of Phaistos. Visitors traveling through the area should be aware that wildfires in dry reed beds can spread quickly, particularly during hot and windy summer conditions. If you are driving or hiking in the Messara region, follow local authority instructions and avoid areas with active smoke. Greece's emergency number is 112, and the fire service can be reached directly at 199.
