Crete's Iconic Lions Fountain Undergoes Restoration in September

Saturday, 20 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The Greek Ministry of Culture has announced that restoration and maintenance works on the Morosini Fountain in Heraklion will begin in September. The Morosini Fountain, also known as the Lions Fountain, is one of Crete's most iconic Venetian landmarks, located in the heart of Heraklion's Lions Square. Built in 1628, it remains a popular meeting point and photo stop for visitors exploring the city center. Tourists planning to visit Heraklion this summer can still see the fountain before works commence, but should expect limited access or visual obstructions around the monument from September onward. The restoration aims to preserve the fountain's historic stonework and ensure its long-term condition. No end date for the works has been specified.
