Heraklion Council Firmly Rejects Waste Incineration Plans

Thursday, 26 March 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read

The Heraklion Municipal Council has formally rejected proposals for waste incineration in the region. The council approved a motion by Mayor Alexis Kalokerinos, President of the Unified Waste Management Association of Crete (ESDAK), to modify the waste management strategy and explicitly rule out incineration as a disposal method.

The decision reflects growing local opposition to incineration facilities, with the council prioritizing alternative waste management approaches. The rejection comes as Crete continues to seek sustainable solutions for its waste disposal challenges while maintaining environmental protections for the island.
