Back to newsSea water temperatures around Crete are warming as summer progresses, reaching comfortable swimming conditions across the island's most popular coastal areas. By late June, water temperatures typically range between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius, depending on the region. The northern coast, including areas around Heraklion and Chania, tends to be slightly cooler than the calmer southern shores near Ierapetra and Matala, which benefit from more sheltered conditions and stronger sun exposure. Visitors planning beach days can expect pleasant swimming throughout the day, with the warmest conditions in the afternoon. The island's most visited beaches, including Elafonissi, Balos, and Vai, are fully accessible and ideal for swimming. Water temperatures will continue rising through July and August, peaking around 27 to 28 degrees Celsius at the height of summer.
