Back to newsThe Mediterranean Sea around Crete is currently at typical late-June temperatures, generally ranging between 23°C and 26°C depending on the region. Northern coastal areas near Heraklion and Rethymno tend to be slightly cooler than the calmer southern shores around Matala and Plakias, where waters warm faster due to reduced wind exposure. The Aegean side of the island can also differ from the Libyan Sea to the south. For swimmers and water sports enthusiasts, these temperatures are comfortable for extended time in the water. Snorkeling and diving conditions are generally favorable at this time of year, with good visibility. Visitors planning beach days should note that sea temperatures will continue rising through July and August, reaching their annual peak in late summer.
