Back to newsWildfires are currently affecting parts of Southern Europe, including areas of northern Greece near Thessaloniki, where industrial fires have been reported. Separately, fires are spreading along the French Mediterranean coast. While Crete itself is not directly mentioned in this report, summer wildfire conditions are active across the broader region. Visitors to Crete should be aware that dry, hot weather increases fire risk island-wide during July and August. Avoid lighting fires or barbecues outside designated areas, do not discard cigarettes in vegetation, and follow any local authority instructions promptly. Check regional fire alerts via the Greek Civil Protection agency (civilprotection.gr) before hiking or visiting rural areas. In case of emergency, call 112.
