Heraklion Museum Booms While Knossos, Phaistos See Visitor Decline

Visitor numbers at Crete's major cultural sites showed mixed trends in 2025. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum recorded an increase in attendance, reinforcing its status as one of Greece's top museums and home to the world's largest collection of Minoan artifacts. By contrast, the iconic Palace of Knossos and the Minoan site of Phaistos both saw a decline in visitor numbers compared to previous years. For tourists planning cultural visits, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum remains a strong choice and is located in the city center, easily accessible from most northern coastal resorts. Knossos is 5 kilometers south of Heraklion and reachable by bus. Phaistos, on the Messara Plain in southern Crete, requires a longer journey but offers a less crowded experience. All three sites are open year-round, with reduced hours outside peak season.
