Back to newsThe Crete branch of GEOTEE, Greece's agricultural technical chamber, has issued a statement on the growing presence of lagocephalus, a toxic pufferfish species, in Cretan waters. The fish, an invasive species from the Indo-Pacific, carries a powerful toxin and poses serious risks if consumed. Local fishing communities face economic losses as the species competes with native fish and contaminates catches. Tourists should be aware that lagocephalus must never be eaten, as its organs contain tetrodotoxin, which has no antidote. If you spot an unfamiliar fish at a market or taverna, ask the vendor to confirm the species. Reputable restaurants and fish markets in Crete are required to remove it from sale, but caution is advised, particularly when buying from informal or roadside vendors.
