Back to newsOfficials from the Lasithi regional government, the Municipality of Lasithi Plateau, and the Crete Development Agency held a meeting to discuss restoring and promoting the iconic windmills of the Lasithi Plateau. The talks focused on plans to rehabilitate the historic windmills, which are among the most recognizable landmarks in eastern Crete. The Lasithi Plateau, located inland from Agios Nikolaos at around 840 meters elevation, is already a popular day-trip destination. If restoration plans move forward, visitors can expect better-preserved windmills and potentially new interpretive or cultural facilities at the site. The plateau is accessible by car via the road from Neapoli or Malia and is typically open to visitors year-round, though mountain road conditions can be challenging in winter. No completion date for the restoration project has been announced.
