Sacred Chapel at Crete's Highest Peak Buried in Rubbish

Monday, 29 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The small chapel near the iconic cross at the summit of Psiloritis (Mount Ida), Crete's highest peak at 2,456 meters, has been found filled with significant amounts of rubbish left by visitors. The site, located above the Nida Plateau in the Rethymno regional unit, holds both religious and cultural importance for locals. Hikers and visitors planning to make the ascent to the Timios Stavros summit are urged to practice leave-no-trace principles and carry out all waste. The trail to the top is popular, particularly in spring and early summer, and the accumulation of litter risks damaging the sacred site and the natural environment. Visitors should bring bags for their waste and respect both the landscape and the religious significance of the chapel.
