Back to newsCrete is under a red-level fire alert this Sunday, with authorities declaring a very high fire risk across the island. The General Secretariat of Civil Protection has placed all relevant emergency services on heightened standby.
Tourists should avoid lighting fires, barbecues, or discarding cigarettes outdoors, including in hotel grounds, beaches, and rural areas. Open burning is prohibited under Greek law during high-risk periods, with significant fines for violations.
If you plan to hike or visit forested or inland areas on Sunday, check local conditions beforehand and have an exit route in mind. Stay away from any smoke or flames and call 199 (fire brigade) immediately if you spot a fire.
