Back to newsLocal stakeholders involved in managing the Samaria Gorge in southwestern Crete are calling for reforms to the protocols governing when the gorge is closed to visitors. The Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest at 16 kilometers, is a major hiking destination in the White Mountains of Chania and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Current closure decisions, typically triggered by weather conditions or fire risk, have been a point of contention between local communities, guides, and authorities. Stakeholders argue the existing system needs clearer, more transparent rules. For tourists planning to hike the gorge, closures can happen with little advance notice, so checking official status before setting out is strongly recommended. The gorge is generally open from May through October, weather permitting.
