Back to newsWildfire activity across Crete improved significantly on Monday afternoon, according to the Hellenic Fire Service. A fire that broke out near Bramiana in the Ierapetra area, in southeastern Crete, has been contained. A separate fire near Afratis has also been brought under control. In the Gazi area, west of Heraklion, firefighters report no active front remaining.
Visitors traveling in eastern or central Crete may notice smoke residue, aerial firefighting aircraft activity, or temporary road access restrictions near affected zones. Ierapetra and Gazi are popular tourist areas, with Gazi sitting on the main road corridor between Heraklion and Rethymno.
Tourists are advised to follow local authority instructions, avoid approaching burned areas, and check road conditions before traveling through these zones. The situation remains under monitoring given dry summer conditions typical of July in Crete.
