Back to newsA commemoration ceremony was held at the Monument of the Executed on Tavronitis beach, in the Municipality of Platanias on the northwest coast of Crete. The event was organized as part of the Municipality of Platanias' program marking the 85th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete, one of the most significant World War II battles in the Mediterranean, fought in May 1941.
The monument honors Cretan civilians executed during the German occupation. Tavronitis holds particular historical weight as German paratroopers landed near the local bridge during the invasion.
Visitors to the Platanias area can pay their respects at the monument year-round. The broader Battle of Crete anniversary commemorations take place each May and include ceremonies across western Crete, including in Chania. Attendance is open to the public and provides meaningful historical context for exploring the region.
