Knossos Palace: Minoan Marvel Inspiring Ancient Greek Legends

Tuesday, 30 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The Palace of Knossos, located just 5 kilometers south of Heraklion city center, is Crete's most visited archaeological site and the largest Bronze Age palace on the island. Built by the Minoan civilization around 1900 BCE and partially reconstructed in the early 20th century by archaeologist Arthur Evans, the complex spans roughly 20,000 square meters and is believed to have inspired the ancient Greek myth of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur. Visitors can explore throne rooms, storage chambers, and vivid fresco reproductions depicting Minoan daily life. The site is open daily, with reduced hours in winter. Tickets cost around 15 euros for adults. Arriving early in the morning is strongly recommended during summer to avoid peak crowds and midday heat. Bus line 2 connects Heraklion city center to Knossos directly.
