Back to newsGreek Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis Kostas Katsafados addressed parliament regarding ongoing restoration efforts in earthquake-affected areas of Heraklion and the town of Arkalochori in central Crete. He confirmed that the local earthquake recovery agency (TAEFK) for Heraklion regional unit has been strengthened both organizationally and operationally. Arkalochori was struck by a significant earthquake in September 2021, causing widespread damage to homes and infrastructure. Recovery work has been progressing since then, with government support for affected residents. Tourists visiting the Heraklion region and surrounding villages may encounter ongoing construction and road works related to rebuilding. Arkalochori is located approximately 25 kilometres south of Heraklion city. The area is generally safe to visit, though travellers should allow extra time when driving through inland villages where repair works may cause minor delays.
