Summer solstice brings scorching heat and Meltemi winds to Crete

Sunday, June 21 marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year across Crete. Conditions across the island are typical for this time of season: hot and sunny with temperatures expected to reach 30 to 33 degrees Celsius in inland areas such as Heraklion and Rethymno, and slightly cooler along coastal stretches. Northerly Meltemi winds may develop during the afternoon, bringing welcome relief from the heat, particularly on the northern coast and in exposed areas such as the Gulf of Mirabello and the Lasithi plateau. Visitors are advised to stay hydrated, apply high-factor sun protection, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity between noon and 3 p.m. Beach conditions are generally favorable. No significant rain or storm activity is expected. Evening temperatures will remain warm, around 22 to 24 degrees, suitable for outdoor dining and sightseeing.
