Governor: Crete's Water Stays Public, Rejects Privatization Plan

Friday, 19 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
Crete's Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis has called for unified public water management across the island, overseen by the Regional Water Authority (OAK), firmly opposing any move toward privatization. Speaking to the local newspaper Haniotika Nea, Arnaoutakis emphasized that water resources must remain under a single coordinated public body to ensure equitable distribution and long-term sustainability across all prefectures of the island. For visitors, this policy discussion has practical relevance: Crete faces recurring water pressure challenges during peak summer months, particularly in popular tourist areas. Unified management under a public authority is intended to improve supply reliability and prevent shortages. Tourists staying in villa rentals or smaller accommodations in rural eastern Crete may occasionally experience low water pressure during July and August. Conserving water where possible remains advisable throughout your stay.
