Back to newsGreek coast guard and rescue services conducted a maritime rescue operation south of Crete, bringing 75 migrants safely to shore. The individuals were initially transferred to Paleochora, a small coastal town on the southwest of the island, before being moved to additional reception facilities.
Such operations are handled by Greek authorities and take place in waters well south of regular tourist and ferry routes. Visitors travelling by boat or ferry between Crete and other islands are not affected by these events, as rescue operations occur in open sea zones far from commercial shipping lanes.
Paleochora itself remains open and accessible to tourists as normal. If you are visiting the southwest coast, no disruptions to local services or beaches are expected. For the latest maritime safety information, check with your ferry operator or local port authority before departure.
