The action was part of NaTour4CChange, a European-funded project aimed at promoting sustainable nature-based tourism and environmental restoration across participating regions. Kato Zakros is known for its Minoan palace ruins and dramatic gorge walk leading down to the sea, making it a popular stop for hikers and history enthusiasts. Xerokampos is a quieter, off-the-beaten-path beach destination nearby. For visitors, this project signals ongoing investment in the natural landscape of eastern Crete. Both villages are roughly 2.5 hours by car from Heraklion and worth combining into a day trip or overnight stay in the Sitia area.
