Back to newsFishermen across Crete are calling on authorities to take immediate action against the growing presence of the silver-cheeked toadfish (lagocephalos) in local waters. The species, which is highly toxic if consumed, has become an increasing threat to the fishing industry, damaging nets and reducing catches. Local fishermen are requesting dedicated infrastructure and support measures to manage the problem effectively. Regional politician Giannis Androulakis has commented on the issue, signaling political attention to the matter. Tourists should be aware that this fish may occasionally appear at local fish markets or in nets and should never be eaten, as its organs contain a potentially lethal toxin. When dining at seafood restaurants in Crete, the fish on your plate is safe, as licensed establishments do not serve this species.
