Back to newsCrete's coastline is famous, but some of the island's most rewarding experiences happen before you reach the water. Scattered across the island, traditional mountain and hillside villages sit just minutes from popular beaches, offering stone-paved alleys, Byzantine churches, local tavernas, and a pace of life unchanged for generations. Villages such as these are found throughout the island, from the Apokoronas region in the west to the Lasithi plateau in the east, often perched above the sea with panoramic views. Visitors are encouraged to build in a stop on the way to the beach rather than driving past. Most villages have at least one kafeneion or taverna serving local food. Parking is generally available at village entrances. The combination of inland culture and coastal scenery is one of Crete's defining strengths and easy to experience in a single half-day outing.
