Crete researchers advance global effort to save endangered monk seals

Wednesday, 1 July 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
Researchers at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), headquartered in Heraklion, have contributed to a significant international scientific milestone in the protection of the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), one of the world's most endangered marine mammals. The species is occasionally spotted along Crete's remote coastlines and sea caves, particularly in less-visited areas of the island's northern and southern shores. This research effort places Crete at the centre of broader conservation work across the Mediterranean. Tourists visiting coastal areas are encouraged to report any monk seal sightings to local authorities rather than approaching the animals, as human disturbance can be harmful. The HCMR's involvement highlights Crete's active role in marine biodiversity research and reinforces ongoing efforts to protect the island's rich underwater ecosystems.
