Back to newsPrimary healthcare services in Crete are under significant strain this summer, operating without meaningful reinforcement despite a population that multiplies several times over during the tourist season. Health centers and local clinics across the island are handling far higher patient volumes than they were designed for, as millions of visitors add to the resident population. Tourists who need non-emergency medical attention may experience longer wait times at local health centers. For minor issues, pharmacies (farmakeio) across Crete are well-stocked and pharmacists can advise on common ailments. For serious emergencies, the main hospitals in Heraklion and Chania have emergency departments. Travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended before visiting Crete, particularly during peak summer months from July through August.
