Back to newsFirefighting crews have successfully contained a wildfire that broke out in the Lasithi region of eastern Crete. Authorities report no active fire front remains in Gazi, a town west of Heraklion. The fires are now under control, with no ongoing threat reported at this time. Tourists visiting the Lasithi Plateau, including the popular Dikteon Cave and windmill areas, as well as those traveling through the Heraklion region, can proceed normally. Visitors are advised to follow any local authority instructions, avoid approaching recently burned areas, and check conditions before hiking in rural or forested zones. During summer months, wildfire risk across Crete remains elevated due to heat and dry winds. Stay informed through local news or your accommodation provider, and report any smoke or flames immediately to the Greek fire service by calling 199.
