Back to newsA wildfire broke out on Sunday afternoon around 2:00 PM in the Gazi area of Heraklion municipality, adding to an already active fire situation across Crete. Two other fires were burning simultaneously near Afrati in Heraklion and in Ierapetra. Wind gusts of up to 7 Beaufort (approximately 50 km/h) were reported, complicating firefighting efforts. Gazi is located just west of Heraklion city, close to the coastal road and tourist areas. Visitors in the Heraklion region should monitor local conditions, avoid rural and forested areas until fires are brought under control, and follow instructions from local authorities. Road access near affected zones may be restricted. Check with your accommodation for updates and keep windows closed if smoke is visible in your area.
