Back to newsA video circulating online shows a dangerous overtaking maneuver on the BOAK, Crete's main east-west highway connecting Heraklion to the eastern part of the island. In the footage, a driver crosses into oncoming traffic to pass another vehicle, creating a serious risk of head-on collision. The BOAK is one of the busiest roads on the island, heavily used by tourists renting cars to reach popular destinations such as Elounda, Agios Nikolaos, and the Lasithi plateau. Visitors driving on Crete are reminded to exercise caution on this highway, particularly on stretches without central barriers. Overtaking on double solid lines is illegal in Greece and carries heavy fines. Always allow extra travel time and avoid driving after dark on unfamiliar rural roads.
