Back to newsTwo wildfires in Crete have been brought under control as of early July 2026. The fire near Heraklion, the island's capital and main hub for international flights, no longer has an active front. A second fire near Ierapetra, a coastal town on the southeastern coast, has also been contained. Fire services and aerial units worked to establish clear perimeters around both blazes. There are no current reports of threats to populated areas, beaches, or major tourist sites. Visitors traveling through Heraklion airport or staying in the Ierapetra region should monitor local updates, as road access near affected rural areas may be temporarily restricted. Smoke may remain visible in these zones over the coming days.
