Back to newsAugust is the hottest month in Crete, with temperatures regularly reaching 30 to 35 degrees Celsius, and occasionally exceeding 38 degrees inland and in southern coastal areas like Matala and Ierapetra. Coastal towns such as Heraklion, Chania, and Rethymno benefit from the Meltemi wind, which provides some relief but can make sea conditions choppy. Humidity remains low, making the heat more bearable than in many Mediterranean destinations. Tourists should plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged sun exposure between noon and 4 pm. Lightweight clothing, high-SPF sunscreen, and a hat are essential. Most beaches offer shade umbrellas for rent. Hotel pools and air-conditioned accommodations are strongly recommended for August travel.
