Back to newsA shark was recently spotted in the waters off Rethymno, on Crete's northern coast, in what locals describe as a rare sighting. Video footage of the encounter circulated widely online. Shark sightings in the Mediterranean are uncommon, and attacks on swimmers are extremely rare. Greek authorities have not issued any formal swimming bans or beach closures in connection with the incident. Tourists visiting beaches around Rethymno can continue their activities normally, but as always, swimmers should stay aware of their surroundings, follow any local signage or lifeguard instructions, and avoid swimming far from shore. The Rethymno coastline remains one of Crete's most popular destinations, with numerous beaches easily accessible from the town center.
