Back to newsGreek authorities are warning that informal, self-organized fishing competitions targeting lagocephalus (pufferfish) are illegal. The lagocephalus is a highly toxic invasive species that has spread throughout Mediterranean waters, including around Crete, and poses a serious risk to human health if consumed. While local fishermen sometimes catch these fish in an effort to reduce their numbers, organizing unofficial competitive fishing events around them violates Greek fishing regulations. Crete is being cited as a potential hub for developing a coordinated, legal response to managing this invasive species. Tourists should be aware that lagocephalus must never be eaten, as its flesh contains a powerful toxin with no antidote. If you see this distinctive fish at a market or restaurant, do not consume it under any circumstances.
