Back to newsA new Police Sub-Directorate has officially opened in the Messara region of southern Crete, marking a significant expansion of law enforcement coverage in the area. The new unit is staffed by 70 officers and represents a dedicated local command for the Messara plain, which had previously been served by broader regional policing structures. The Messara region is home to several popular tourist destinations, including the Minoan palace of Phaistos, Matala beach, and the villages of the fertile southern plain. The strengthened police presence is expected to improve response times and security across this widely visited area. For tourists, this means faster access to local law enforcement assistance if needed. The inauguration was welcomed by the local Police Officers' Union as a long-overdue step toward more effective public safety in one of Crete's most historically and culturally significant regions.
