Back to newsThe bust of Nikos Xylouris, one of Crete's most celebrated musicians, has been restored in Heraklion. Xylouris (1936-1980), born in the village of Anogeia in central Crete, was a legendary lyra player and singer whose music became synonymous with Cretan cultural identity. His bust stands as a tribute to his lasting legacy in the city. Visitors to Heraklion can pay their respects at the monument, and those interested in Cretan music culture may also wish to visit Anogeia, a mountain village about 75 km from Heraklion that remains a living center of traditional Cretan music and is closely associated with the Xylouris family, several of whom continue to perform traditional Cretan music today.
