Back to newsThe Region of Crete has formally requested the immediate launch of a pilot management program targeting the lagocephalus, a toxic pufferfish species that has spread rapidly in Greek waters. Crete holds particular significance in this issue, as it was the first region in Greece where the species was detected and where its population grew fastest. The lagocephalus is highly toxic if consumed and poses a serious food safety risk. Tourists visiting Crete should avoid purchasing or eating pufferfish from any source, as the fish can appear in local catches. If you see an unfamiliar fish being sold at a market or offered on a menu, ask staff to confirm the species before eating. The pilot program, once activated, aims to establish coordinated removal and monitoring efforts across the island.
