Back to newsThe Region of Crete received recognition at the 4th Handmade Pie Competition held in Sykia, Halkidiki, where a Cretan delegation showcased traditional pastries and local products. The team presented a selection of authentic Cretan specialties, including kalitsounia (soft cheese or herb-filled pastries), lychnarakia (small savory pies), graviera cheese, paximadia (twice-baked barley rusks), xerotigana (crispy fried honey pastries), amygdalota (almond sweets), and tsikoudia, the island's signature grape spirit. The competition, which brings together regional food traditions from across Greece, highlighted Crete's deep-rooted pastry culture. Visitors to Crete can find most of these products at local bakeries, markets, and traditional tavernas throughout the island, particularly in villages in Heraklion and Lasithi regions where these recipes have been passed down for generations.
