Back to newsCrete recorded some of the highest temperatures in Greece this Saturday, with the thermometer reaching 37.9°C (100°F) at Elafonisi, the popular pink-sand beach on the island's southwest coast. Temperatures across the island are significantly above seasonal averages, making outdoor activities and beach visits more demanding than usual.
Tourists planning to visit Elafonisi or other exposed beaches and archaeological sites should take precautions: carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person, apply high-SPF sunscreen, and avoid direct sun between 12:00 and 17:00. Lightweight, light-coloured clothing and a hat are strongly recommended. Those hiking or renting vehicles without air conditioning should plan routes for early morning or late afternoon. Stay hydrated and seek shade regularly. Check local forecasts daily, as heat conditions may persist through the weekend.
