Back to newsA seminar organized by the Association of Cretan Olive Oil Producers (SEDIK) recently highlighted the cultural and health significance of Cretan olive oil, held at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICH). The event brought together industry experts through round-table discussions, olive oil tastings, and theatrical performances to address challenges currently facing the olive farming sector across Crete and Greece.
Olive oil is central to Cretan identity and cuisine, and producers are working to strengthen branded, quality-certified exports. For visitors, this underscores why locally produced extra virgin olive oil is a prized souvenir and table staple across the island. Look for PDO-certified Cretan olive oil at local markets and specialty food shops in Chania, Heraklion, and Rethymno. Tastings and agritourism experiences at olive estates are also available throughout the island, particularly during harvest season from October to February.
