Chania Issues SMS Phishing Alert as Scam Wave Targets Drivers

Tuesday, 12 May 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
Authorities in Chania are warning drivers about a new wave of SMS scam attempts circulating in the region. Fraudsters are sending text messages to drivers' mobile phones, attempting to deceive recipients into taking action that could lead to financial loss or personal data theft. This type of smishing (SMS phishing) targets anyone with a local or roaming number, meaning tourists renting cars or using their phones in Crete may also receive these messages. If you receive an unexpected SMS related to fines, tolls, parking, or vehicle registration while in Chania, do not click any links or call back unknown numbers. Contact your rental agency or local police if unsure. Report suspicious messages to the Chania police directly. Staying alert to unsolicited texts is advisable throughout your visit.
