Greek island airports record 6% passenger surge in May as summer travel demand peaks

Friday, 12 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
Passenger traffic across the 14 regional Greek airports managed by Fraport Greece rose 6.0% in May 2026 compared to May 2025, with a total of 3.9 million passengers handled. This network includes Heraklion (HER) and Chania (CHQ), Crete's two main international airports. The increase signals strong and growing demand for travel to Greek island destinations this season. Visitors flying into Crete this summer should expect busier terminals, particularly at Heraklion, and are advised to allow extra time for check-in, security, and baggage claim. Booking airport transfers and car rentals well in advance is recommended, as higher passenger volumes typically tighten availability during peak periods.
