Theocharis Athitakis, a native of Sfakia in southwestern Crete, is commemorating the anniversary of the Battle of Krapi (1770) and honoring the local hero Giannis Daskalogiannis by walking the route from Anopouli village to Heraklion. He set off at 6:00 in the morning to complete the journey on foot. Daskalogiannis led a Cretan uprising against Ottoman rule in 1770, and remains one of the island's most celebrated resistance figures. The Battle of Krapi is a key moment in Cretan historical memory, particularly in the Sfakia region of the White Mountains. Visitors interested in Cretan history and culture can explore the Sfakia area, including Anopouli village, which sits in the mountains above the Libyan Sea. The region is also a popular starting point for gorge hikes and is accessible by road from Chania.
