Mediterranean Temperatures Surge to Record Highs with Returning El Niño

Friday, 8 May 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
Ocean temperatures worldwide are approaching record highs this May, driven by the return of El Niño, a natural climate phenomenon that raises sea surface temperatures across large parts of the globe. For visitors to Crete, this means the Mediterranean and surrounding waters are likely to be warmer than usual this season. While warmer seas can make swimming more comfortable earlier in the year, elevated temperatures can also intensify summer heat on land, making midday sun more intense than typical. Tourists planning outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, or beach visits should carry sufficient water, apply high-factor sunscreen, and avoid prolonged sun exposure between noon and 4pm. Coastal breezes may offer some relief. Visitors sensitive to heat are advised to plan strenuous activities for early morning or late afternoon throughout the summer months.
