Nationwide Protests Target NATO's Souda Bay Base in Crete

Tuesday, 5 May 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
Protests are planned for May 16 and 17 near Souda Bay, in the Chania region of northwestern Crete. Various local groups and organizations are coordinating a two-day demonstration as part of a nationwide initiative against the Souda military base. Souda Bay is one of NATO's largest naval bases in the Mediterranean and is located close to Chania city. Visitors traveling through the Chania area on those dates may encounter increased traffic, road disruptions, or a heightened local presence near the base and surrounding roads. Tourists planning to visit Chania or the western part of Crete around May 16-17 should check local news for updates on route closures and allow extra travel time. The demonstrations are expected to be peaceful, but monitoring the situation before heading into the area is advisable.
