Raw Sewage Pollutes Chania's Venetian Harbor

Wednesday, 13 May 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
Residents and visitors have raised complaints about sewage conditions at the Venetian Harbor in Chania, a popular waterfront destination in northwestern Crete. Reports describe raw sewage entering the harbor area and a strong, unbearable odor affecting the seafront. A drainage maintenance vehicle from the local water authority DEYACH was observed parked in Syntrivani Square at midday, when thousands of people were gathered along the waterfront promenade. The Venetian Harbor is one of Crete's most visited landmarks, lined with restaurants, cafes, and the iconic lighthouse. Tourists planning to visit the area should be aware that waterfront conditions may be unpleasant during maintenance or sewage incidents. It is advisable to check local conditions before dining or spending extended time along the harbor, and to avoid swimming near the port until the issue is formally resolved.
