Back to newsThis year marks the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, one of the most significant events in the island's modern history. In May 1941, German forces launched a large-scale airborne invasion of Crete, making it one of the first major parachute assaults in military history. The battle lasted from 20 to 31 May and resulted in the German occupation of the island, though at a heavy cost to the invaders. Cretan civilians, including children, fought alongside Allied troops in fierce resistance. Commemorations take place each year across the island, with the main ceremonies held in Chania, the site of the heaviest fighting. Visitors can explore the Battle of Crete Museum in Chania and the German War Cemetery at Maleme to better understand this chapter of the island's history.
