Back to newsSamaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest gorges and a flagship natural attraction in western Crete, has reopened to visitors for the 2026 season. Located in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) of the Chania regional unit, the gorge runs approximately 16 kilometers from the village of Xyloskalo down to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. It typically closes over winter due to weather conditions and reopens in spring when trails are safe to walk. Visitors can access the gorge via the Omalos plateau, roughly 40 kilometers south of Chania city. The hike takes between 4 and 7 hours depending on pace. Sturdy footwear, water, and sun protection are essential. Entrance fees apply and early morning starts are recommended to avoid midday heat.
