A moderate magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck 38 km south of Sitia, in the Lasithi region of eastern Crete, on Monday, April 27, 2026, at 08:06 UTC (11:06 local time). Earthquakes of this size are common in the eastern Mediterranean and typically cause little to no damage. At this magnitude, visitors in the area may have felt light shaking but there is no cause for concern. No tsunami warning was issued. Sitia is a popular destination known for its beaches, Venetian fortress, and proximity to the Vai palm forest and Toplou Monastery. Tourists already in or planning to visit the Lasithi region can continue their plans as normal.
