4.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Eastern Crete

Tuesday, 5 May 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck near Goudouras, a small coastal village in the Lasithi regional unit of eastern Crete. The tremor was recorded by seismological networks and felt in the surrounding area. Earthquakes of this magnitude are common in Crete, which sits in one of the most seismically active zones in Europe due to the subduction of the African tectonic plate beneath the Eurasian plate. A 4.0 magnitude event is generally considered minor and is unlikely to cause structural damage or pose a safety risk to visitors. No injuries or significant damage have been reported. Tourists staying or traveling in the Lasithi area, including popular destinations such as Vai and Sitia, can continue their plans normally. If you experience a tremor, standard advice applies: stay calm, move away from windows, and follow local authority guidance if stronger aftershocks occur.
