Greece Celebrates 85th Anniversary of Battle of Crete

Wednesday, 20 May 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Greece's Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Ioannis Plakiotakis, traveled to London to attend commemorations marking the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete. The battle took place in May 1941, when Allied and Cretan forces resisted a large-scale German airborne invasion for ten days before the island fell under occupation. It remains one of the most significant events in Cretan history and a source of deep local pride. Visitors to Crete can explore this history at the Battle of Crete and National Resistance Museum in Heraklion, as well as at war cemeteries and memorials across the island, including the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Souda Bay near Chania. May is a meaningful time to visit these sites, as local commemorative events are held throughout the month.
