Samaria Gorge in Crete Closed to Hikers on Friday

Thursday, 21 May 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The Samaria Gorge in the Chania region will be closed to visitors on Friday, May 22. The gorge, one of Crete's most popular natural attractions and a UNESCO-listed site in the White Mountains National Park, will not be accessible to hikers on this date. No reason for the closure has been officially stated, but temporary closures typically occur due to weather conditions, fire risk, or maintenance. Visitors planning to hike the 16-kilometer trail on Friday should postpone their trip and check with local authorities or tour operators for the next available date. The gorge is typically open from May through October, and entry is managed by the Greek Forest Service. Always confirm access before traveling to the trailhead at Xyloskalo.
